Doing business in the midst of a Coronavirus crisis

First up, big love to everyone. This is the biggest test of resilience for us all and I hope you’re doing OK.

If you have had to close your doors, adapt quickly, manage extreme cash flow challenges, or say goodbye to members of your team, it is truly very difficult and know we’re there with you.

Even if it’s only saying goodbye to your morning coffee from your local on your way to work is sad enough.

It’s been a busy few weeks for us too, helping our clients share important updates and changes to their businesses and communities – whether it’s via their own channels or the media – as the daily government regulations and guidelines continue to evolve.

We were particularly proud of the resilience of the crew at Haven Newstead and how all the retailers pivoted so quickly to launch food delivery to your door.

And we’re grateful to Channel Nine, the Courier Mail and other food and lifestyle media for helping to share this story so widely.

But if you’re finding things particularly tough, you are not alone.

We too are still riding the waves of emotions the Coronavirus pandemic is inflicting on all of us in different ways (and FYI – highly recommend checking out this article in Harvard Business Review which gives some great insight into the ‘grief’ we’re going through as our world abruptly changes.)

But I’ve had a few thoughts that may also help you out with doing business during this time.

Insights for ‘doing’ business during this time

1) Let’s all continue to remind ourselves this is a temporary change for now.

While things will be different – for some time, there will be an end point and we’ll come out stronger than ever.

2) Media want your stories

Don’t be afraid to call up media outlets and share you challenges, tips for the community or how you’re adapting.

Share your vulnerabilities and be brave. Get the word out.

Media and our community are searching for some light too in this time, so positive stories are especially important – like this incredible initiative by Brisbane’s restaurateurs.

3) Continue to stay connected with your community

If you are forced to close or adapt in this time, it’s vital you continue to keep in touch with your community, whether it’s via email, socials and media.

They’ll know you’re on staying in the game and ready to ride this out – and will be there waiting for you at the other end.

4) Help is available

If you are doing it tough right now – I am happy to have a free chat with you if you need some advice or just a listening ear.

While my time is restrained more so than ever with little ones now home, I am here to help or connect or direct you to the right people.

And don’t forget about the Government assistance you may be eligible for.

5) Getting balance between work and family life

If you’re like me and now have the kids around or countless other distractions around now (like the news) – interrupting your work flow, it’s time to get a new routine going so there’s balance between work, meals and play time.

I think this is going to be better for creativity, and discipline training all round personally.

And I love hearing and seeing little ones and cats in the background of those I’ve chatted to – getting to know them better on a more intimate level.

I’m also starting the day off with an online workout with Fita-U or some virtual yoga with Brisbane Yoga Space to make sure I stay mentally and physically fit and healthy.

I’m then on to the immediate requirements, before spending a few hours with the bubs to wear them out.

6) Using the time to get more mindful – in business and life

I don’t know about you but I’ve never spoken more to my extended family, friends and business friends than I have in the past few weeks.

It’s getting us all to be far more compassionate and community focused – which is the root of a genuinely ‘good’ business.

And if this time is calling you to have some much needed down time, then that’s exactly what you should do.

Hope you’re hanging in there – and as I said, reach out if you need an ear or advice in this time.

Together everyone will get through this stronger than ever!

We also shared more tips to coping during the Coronavirus crisis, via this post, including:

  • Review your business continuity plans

I’d love to hear how you’re coping, adapting or thriving during this time – because we’re all in this together
